Advising the Olympics

starting blocks imageWhen London was awarded the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, they wanted to deliver a sustainable games with a lasting environmental, as well as social legacy.

As part of this commitment, the Olympic Delivery Authority and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, approached NNFCC to help minimise greenhouse gas emissions and the waste produced at every stage of the project.

Approach

NNFCC have developed a strong working relationship with the ODA and LOCOG to champion the use of bioplastics and find better alternatives for end-of-life disposal.

Results

The self contained nature of the Olympic Park means it is an ideal way to demonstrate to the public the simplicity of using renewable packaging.

NNFCC have helped setup a supply chain for bio-based packaging to London 2012. This means that many of the fast food wrappers, sandwich boxes and drink cartons served within the Olympic Park area will be made from compostable materials.

We also ensured that these materials must be independently certified compliant with EN13432. Meaning that all non-reusable, non-recyclable packaging and consumables from the games will be suitable for treatment by an in-vessel composting or anaerobic digestion facility.

We will continue to be active with the ODA and LOCOG right up to the games and we hope to help deliver the most successful and sustainable Olympics yet, by using compostable materials and clean renewable energy.
