Making Advanced Gasification a Reality

NNFCC are working with INEOS Bio – part of chemical giant INEOS – to help deliver a unique fuel and energy project on Teesside in the UK.

Traditionally waste has either been landfilled or incinerated, without making use of the energy it stores. However, we are now faced by the dual challenges of climate change and limitations on landfill space.

As a result, sending waste to landfill is fast becoming an unpopular and expensive option for waste management. We need to find novel ways to manage and add value to our waste by capturing the vast amount of renewable energy it stores.

Approach

Through our consultancy service, NNFCC are helping facilitate INEOS Bio’s funding and working to address barriers to the development of the company's gasification plant.

Methods

  • Funding support
  • Policy and regulatory support

Results

From 2012, subject to financing, the plant will be Europe’s first to make advanced road fuel and renewable energy from biomass, including normal household waste.

The plant, to be located at the INEOS Seal Sands site in the Tees Valley, is designed to produce 30 million litres of bioethanol each year and generate more than 3MW of renewable electricity for export, from over 100,000 tonnes of biodegradable household and commercial waste.
