Energy and Heating

Biomass is being used in homes across the country to produce reneweable heat and electricity. 'Biomass' can come from a variety of sources, including energy crops, wood and materials we might class as waste today.

On a domestic scale the most commonly used form of biomass is wood. Wood-burning stoves and boilers are fuelled by logs or pellets and can provide heat and hot water to your home. On a larger scale wood is also being used to produce electricity.

Burning wood for heat and power is better for the environment than using fossil fuels because we can grow more trees to replace those we use; making wood a potentially carbon neutral fuel. However, biomass boilers require a steady supply of wood, and the UK supply network is still being developed.

We work closely with organisations like the Biomass Energy Centre (BEC), to advise anyone with an interest in biomass derived fuels or biomass to energy conversion technologies.
