Paints and Interiors

There are a range of natural paints, wood treatments, floor coverings and home decorations available on the UK market.

Natural paints can be based on linseed oil, chalk, lime or even casein (the protein found in milk and cheese). Paints may also contain plant-derived pigments and essential oils.

The reasons for using natural paints or pigments vary from their low volatility and breathability, to differences in texture or colour intensity.

Buildings which contain natural materials such as hemp and lime or straw need to be painted using breathable paints, allowing moisture to enter and leave walls and surfaces.

Natural floors can be hard-wearing and beautiful. Examples are wool carpeting, wood floors, and sisal/jute/seagrass coverings. While natural fibres can be used in curtains and furniture. Some furniture now incorporates renewable polymers and biocomposites.
