Biofuels

Biofuels are liquid fuels made from biomass. Currently, the most widely available biofuels are biodiesel and bioethanol.

Biodiesel is made from plant-derived oils such as oilseed rape. Biodiesel is manufactured at several sites across the UK, and production is expected to expand rapidly over the next decade.

Bioethanol is typically made by fermentation of plant-derived sugars from sugar cane, wheat and maize. Although most of this bioethanol is imported there are new plants being built here in the UK which are producing home grown fuel, such as British Sugar's bioethanol plant in Wissington.

Although most of this biofuel is mixed at the pump with fossil-based fuel, you may want to use purer variants.

Pure biodiesel is available from several manufacturers and suppliers, and can be used in diesel engines following modification. Bioethanol is available as a blend called E85: 85% bioethanol mixed with 15% fossil fuel. E85 can be used in 'flex-fuel' car engines.
