Statistics Signposting

The NNFCC help disseminate reliable information and statistics to a range of stakeholders engaged in the biorenewable crops, wood and waste sectors.

UK Renewable Energy Production

According to the Digest of UK Energy Statistics, we consumed 6.9 million tonnes (oil equivalent) of renewable energy in 2009.

Biomass is currently responsible for 2.6% of UK energy

Biomass was the largest source of renewable energy, producing 2.6% of total UK demand. Over 80% of this figure came from crops, wood or waste grown here in the UK.

While the renewable heat sector remained small (<1% of total heat generation), biomass was responsible for 2.8% of UK electricity generation.

The use of renewable transport fuels has also been increasing and according to the Renewable Fuels Agency accounted for 3.3% of all road fuel (1.6 billion litres) in 2009/10. More than 80% of biofuels are made from plant oils (biodiesel) and almost 20% are grown here in the UK.

UK Resource Availability

Defra provide statistics on the total area of energy and fuel crops in the UK. Here are the key results at the end of 2009:

  • Oilseed rape plantings for non-food use totalled 85,700 hectares
  • Miscanthus plantings stood at 12,700 hectares
  • Short rotation coppice plantings stood at 6,400 hectares

For more information on non-food crop areas click on the link to Defra's experimental statistics on the right hand side of this page.

European Resource Availability

Statistics on the areas of crops, including non-food crops, grown in the European Union can be found on the European Commission's Eurostat website. Statistical data for Europe were also produced as part of the IENICA project.

Global Resource Availability

There are data available on the FAOSTAT website about areas of crops grown around the world.
