NNFCC, a bioeconomy consultancy, and Inspire Biotech, a London based Industrial
Biotechnology consultancy, have agreed to work together on strategic commercial
projects in the area of bioeconomy development and industrial biotechnology.
Established in 2003,
NNFCC’s mission is to provide clients with a holistic view of feedstock,
technology, policy and market development across the bioeconomy, enabling them
to make informed business decisions and develop sustainable business
strategies.
Inspire Biotech is a
team of experienced consultants with biotechnology and life sciences
backgrounds. The Inspire team have a proven track record in discovering,
developing and launching new life-saving medicines, as well as discovering and
developing new ways to turn waste into biofuels and chemicals.
Both NNFCC and
Inspire share a common belief in the potential of industrial biotechnology
within the bioeconomy to create sustainable business opportunities for feedstock
suppliers, technology and project developers, manufacturers and investors.
Dr Adrian Higson,
Lead Consultant for Bio-based products at NNFCC said: “We are delighted to be
able to work with Inspire Biotech; the collaboration brings together complementary
skills, experience and expertise. Working together we can provide comprehensive
expert analysis and in-depth business insight to companies working in the
bioeconomy area.”
Dr Steven Martin, Founding Director of Inspire Biotech said: “We are pleased to be continuing our successful relationship with NNFCC and extend our mutual bandwidth to facilitate growth within the bioeconomy and the further commercialisation of Industrial Biotechnology.”
In 2014, NNFCC and Inspire Biotech were commissioned by The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Innovate UK and The Industrial Biotechnology Leadership Forum (IBLF) to undertake a
joint study to identify whether there was a specific need for investment in industrial biotechnology pilot scale equipment in the UK.
Based on an extensive knowledge of the area and direct process development experience, NNFCC and Inspire Biotech were able to comprehensively landscape the availability of accessible pilot scale equipment and engage with stakeholders to understand both academic and business needs. The study found that overall the UK is currently well served with respect to accessible pilot equipment and competence, and is also competitive with other European member states. However, a number of emerging technologies were identified as areas worthy of investment, and further limited investment – focused on specific established sectors – would strengthen UK capability.

Plant Study
Industrial
Biotechnology Process Plant Study: Since the publication of the Government
initiated Innovation and Growth Team report on Industrial Biotechnology (IB),
UK stakeholders have been working to realise the commercial benefits of IB,
building on the acknowledged strength of the UK research base.
As access to
pilot-scale equipment is commonly cited as a barrier to development of IB
processes, NNFCC and Inspire Biotech were commissioned by BBSRC, EPSRC,
Innovate UK, and IBLF to identify whether there is a specific need for
investment in pilot scale equipment in the UK and to develop the outline case
for any investment. More information on the report is available at http://www.nnfcc.co.uk/publications/report-industrial-biotechnology-plant-study
