Energy Crops Calculator
Latest update reflects the new 50% grant rate. This spreadsheet has been developed to aid assessment of the economic feasibility of energy and industrial crops in comparison with arable crops using case studies of short rotation coppice and Miscanthus and two annual crops.

The requirement to grow only non-food crops on set-aside land allowed for production of both industrial and energy crops that otherwise would not have been grown. However, with the removal of set-aside, energy and industrial crops will be subject to direct competition with potential competitor arable crops.
As such, farmers’ decisions on whether or not to grow such crops will be affected. Economic feasibility of the crops is a factor on which farmers will base decisions.
Summaries of the assumptions made for each crop are outlined in the input data worksheet of the workbook.
