LCAs of Natural Fibre Insulation Materials, NNFCC 07-007

Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) of Natural Fibre Insulation Materials. Data was obtained from insulation manufacturers to produce a transparent inventory about their environmental impacts. The study showed that that natural fibre insulation (NFI) materials have the potential to perform more cost effectively in the UK marketplace and add environmental benefits.

The assessment was conducted for natural fibre insulation materials including hemp/recycled cotton and waste sheep wool. Across different environmental criteria, natural and renewable products generally pose a low impact and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

UK has potential for scaling up production of natural fibre insulation which would further improve the environmental profile.
