Foreword
Increasing research shows that
the agricultural sector, particularly for meat production, is responsible for
significant carbon emissions. Land-use change associated with pasture farming
is one of the causes. In addition, large amount of methane are produced as ruminant
animals digest their food which has a stronger greenhouse gas effect than
carbon dioxide. But protein for human consumption, and indeed other industries,
is still essential. Animal feed itself requires protein, as does the
nutraceutical and personal care markets.
Sources of protein not
of animal origin are growing in demand as society becomes more aware of the
environmental issues surrounding meat production. Biotechnology can tentatively
provide one solution. Geltor is a biodesign company creating high-performance proteins........
