Recently,
an increasing number of businesses have been either reducing or banning the use
of plastic bags. Last month, Co-op announced that it will remove plastic
bags for life from sale in all 2,600 stores, warning that the low-cost,
reusable bag has become the new single-use carrier. The Co-op will offer
compostable bags which once the function of carrying shopping home can be used
for the collection of food waste. Our homes are not just sources of plastic
packaging waste; a variety of plastics are used in appliances and in the very construction
of the building we live and work in.
According to a report
published by the United Nations Environment Programme, the construction
industry’s carbon footprint reached an all-time high in 2019, accounting for
nearly 40% of global CO2 emissions. Of those emissions, which also
include building operations, 11% resulted from building materials...
