Foreword
According to Vogue and BBC, the global fashion industry can account
for up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions every year. Most garments,
accessories, and footwear are still formulated from petroleum-based,
non-biodegradable synthetic materials. This gives rise to the idea of
sustainable fashion – whose market value was around £5.5 billion in 2021,
according to Statista. The onus of sustainable fashion is not only on the
consumer – to buy less, take care of clothes, and ensure they have a second
life; but also clothing companies – to use less harmful chemicals, water, and
virgin synthetics like polyester.
Leather is an
abundant material in fashion, and recently, biotechnology company VitroLabs has
raised over £35 million, to take its world-first cell cultivated animal leather
to pilot scale. Their large-scale tissue cultivator utilises advanced tissue
engineering to optimise cell expansion processes; producing sustainable leather
