Foreword
As food
consumption increases globally, the need to keep goods fresh and safe is
leading to an ever-growing demand for quality packaging. Most packaging is
currently made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a petroleum-derived
polymer which holds barrier properties crucial to the packaging of perishable
goods. In an effort to reduce consumption of fossil resources, a new generation
of biobased polymers is arising, with many biobased polymers having been
developed over the past few years. Perhaps one of the most well-known
alternatives to PET, polyethylene furanoate (PEF) has become the favoured
option for leading brands such as Coca-Cola and Danone. Aside from its biobased
nature, PEF’s attractiveness is undoubtably due to its excellent barrier properties,
which are superior to those of PET.
Avantium is one of the leading developers of PEF
globally. The company has recently received the green light on its newly
developed biobased plantMEG™...
