Foreword

As food consumption increases globally, the need to keep goods fresh and safe is leading to an ever-growing demand for quality packaging. Most packaging is currently made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a petroleum-derived polymer which holds barrier properties crucial to the packaging of perishable goods. In an effort to reduce consumption of fossil resources, a new generation of biobased polymers is arising, with many biobased polymers having been developed over the past few years. Perhaps one of the most well-known alternatives to PET, polyethylene furanoate (PEF) has become the favoured option for leading brands such as Coca-Cola and Danone. Aside from its biobased nature, PEF’s attractiveness is undoubtably due to its excellent barrier properties, which are superior to those of PET.
