Foreword

The true scope of the issue posed by worldwide plastic pollution has only recently been described. Most plastic litter ends up in the ocean and is carried around the world by currents, making it nearly impossible to clean up in the long-term. Extensive work is being carried out internationally to find alternative methods of disposing of the waste, and to develop plastic-like compounds which could considerably reduce the need for waste treatment altogether. Biobased plastics, which are made from biodegradable biological raw materials, are an up and coming technology which shows signs of great promise for the future.
Earlier this month, the largest Korean chemical company LG Chem announced that it had developed a 100% biobased plastic made from material derived from corn-based glucose and crude glycerol. The new material is said to hold mechanical properties......
