Foreword
Moving away from fossil resources and towards biobased feedstocks for the production of chemicals, materials and fuels is required for sustainable development, but the biobased industries are at a disadvantage when it comes to making the switch. Making the transition is not necessarily competitive, which could be as a result of biomass availability, lack of viable biobased technologies or economic issues associated with operating on a relatively smaller scale.
As for the obstacles related to biobased technologies, a recent review has given an overview to some of the Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) of the biobased industries. They have also been evaluated for their sustainability via life-cycle assessments (LCAs)........
