Each month we review the latest news and select key announcements and commentary from across the bioenergy sector.

Foreword

As the strategic aspects of the country’s Net Zero objective are becoming more defined, key industrial sectors are getting ready for their transition towards decarbonised activities and renewable energies. The UK gas networks have jointly sponsored a study into the role of green gas for transport in Great Britain’s effort to establish a decarbonised industry by 2050. The study states that biomethane will have a big role to play in achieving such goals but that production and distribution will need to be ramped up quickly to maximise biomethane’s potential and bring the country closer to its 2050 goal. As well as pointing out that 80% of the gas supplied to trucks was biomethane in 2019, the study shows that there remains a lot of unexploited potential for biomethane production, proving that bio-CNG is a viable and promising investment into the future.

In line with the findings from the above study, Royal Mail has announced that it is adding 29 biogas-trucks to its fleet of bio-CNG fuelled 40-tonne HGVs. The new trucks will be stationed in the north-west of England and will join the two bio-CNG fuelled HGVs already in operation there...
