Foreword

With winter slowly rolling its way in, we are approaching a time of peak energy demand here in the UK. This extra demand puts greater pressure on the UK’s generating infrastructure, and as such, the UK Capacity Market exists to allow for the industry to mitigate these spikes in demand without people losing power. Under the Capacity Market, generators may “bid” for the opportunity to make up the gap in generation and demand when spikes occur. This is accomplished by offering decreasing subsidy levels for the energy to be provided, until generators are found who are willing to provide that level of generation for that price. Several large bioenergy generators have previously had successes in the Capacity Market, as bioenergy is able to provide power as reliably as fossil fuels, but this participation has been limited to all but the biggest generators, as bioenergy tends to be more costly to generators, with the higher price of feedstocks. This often means that.........
