Foreword
Biodiesel, commonly produced from
vegetable oils – mainly rapeseed and soybean, animal fats and used cooking oil,
is a cleaner-burning alternative to petroleum diesel. The global biodiesel
market is expected to be valued at around £18 billion in 2022, and in 2019,
approximately 41 billion litres of biodiesel were globally produced. 2020 saw
the first decline in overall global biofuels production and supply after five
consecutive years of growth, due to reduced transport activity from COVID-19.
However, biodiesel was less affected than other biofuels, as a major proportion
of biodiesel consumption is for goods transportation, which the pandemic had
lesser effect on, than personal mobility.
According to the UK’s Department for Transport
(DfT), 1,614 million litres-equivalent of biodiesel were supplied in 2020. In
terms of the 2021 obligation year, by the end of December, DfT had verified 60%
of the total 2021 renewable fuel supply, and thus far, 700 million
litres-equivalent of biodiesel supply were verified, all of which was produced
from waste feedstocks...
