Foreword
One of the barriers to biofuels
permeating the market further is the limit on bioethanol blending here in the
UK. Currently, standard gasoline contains 5% bioethanol known as E5, however, the UK has already
agreed legislation that would allow the blending of up to 10% ethanol in
gasoline but the country lags behind
other nations in implementing the new blending rates: Brazil has a minimum
legal blend of E20, the USA likewise mandates E10 – and this month cleared E15
for use year-round – and many EU countries also have higher blends widely
available. The UK government has been dragging its heels on the introduction of
E10, despite pressure from the biofuels sector. A consultation was launched last
year, but the response has yet to be published. Now the all-party parliamentary
group for British Bioethanol has warned that without introduction of E10, the
UK’s bioethanol industry is likely to decline and eventually disappear. The
beginnings of this have already been seen with the closure last year of
Vivergo’s ethanol plant, one of the largest in Europe. This comes in the
wake of a report by ePURE, surveying their members to ascertain typical
greenhouse gas savings from using bioethanol as transport fuel, finding that.........
