Foreword
Having proven itself to be an efficient, reliable and sustainable
alternative to fossil-based fuels, ethanol has become the most produced biofuel
worldwide. As more and more nations draw out strategies to reduce their overall
carbon emissions, and as they begin the transition from oil-based to bio-based
fuels, it is expected that the ethanol market will increase by nearly 5% in the
next 7 years. However due to the current COVID-19 crisis and the many socio-economic
consequences it has been having, the use of biofuels by the transportation
industry has dropped significantly during the second half of 2020. More
particularly, the demand for ethanol, which accounts for a fifth of total
biofuel consumption, has decreased by 48%.
In spite of those
trends, the share of total transportation fuel consumption occupied by biofuels
has continued to increase in the UK...
