Foreword
How best to manage rising carbon
emissions, increasing consumption and food security for a growing population is
a question that is tricky to answer. Solutions to one issue often have knock-on
effects – for example, the planting of biofuel crops preventing land from being
used for food. However, rising global temperatures requires some form of action
and with only a finite amount of land, sustainable management is key. This
month, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have presented a
report entitled ‘Climate Change and Land: an IPCC special report on climate
change, desertification, land degradation, sustainable land management, food
security, and greenhouse gas fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems’ in order to
provide some clarity for policymakers. Maximising the output of land designated for crop production is also
important, while still protecting the natural environment. Delivering..........
