Foreword

Underpinning the modern transition into more sustainable production and consumption of goods and services, lies the concept of circular economy: that once something has been used, it needn’t “drop-out” of the economy, and instead can be re-used to continue to generate value. Waste management has become one of the significant issues in the transition to a circular economy, as repurposing and recycling of waste is the preferred way to derive continued value from waste. Duly, recycling and waste management have been under policy scrutiny in recent years, and the UK government has now published its eagerly-awaited Resources & Waste Strategy. As is to be expected from such a strategy, the overwhelming focus is on the development of a more robust recycling ecosystem in the UK. It notes that currently there is inconsistency in how recyclable waste is handled around the UK, and the Strategy strives for consistency in such matters.
