Foreword

Wood pellets are a favoured choice of bioenergy feedstock in the EU. The trade association ‘Bioenergy Europe’ recently reported a 5% increase in wood pellet production between 2018 and 2019, with the UK being the largest industrial consumer. However, as consumption exceeds domestic production, the EU is importing product from overseas. The US is the  second largest producer of wood pellets, behind China, and currently export 99% of its pellet production to the EU. The UK is a key destination for US pellets. The ever-growing push for, and questioning of sustainability and the reliability offered by wood pellets as a bioenergy feedstock is leading an increasing number of large international energy and power companies to transition from coal-fired to wood pellet powered plants, with further transitions currently planned for the Netherlands.
