Foreword
Sustainable land management involves
using resources for human needs and protecting and maintaining the land and its
resources. It is a multifaceted topic that is regularly cropping up. Last
month’s edition included details on an IPCC report that considered how best to
manage rising global temperatures with only a finite amount of land. This month
sees another report on sustainable land management, but from the United Nations
Convention to Combat Desertification – Science Policy Interface. Specifically,
it provides guidance on how to use land management techniques to maintain or
increase soil carbon, which has the double benefit of improving soil fertility
and being a much-needed carbon sink to mitigate climate change. Utilizing wood as a source of energy is one way of becoming more
environmentally friendly with our energy usage, but the benefits are offset if sustainable
forestry management practices are not implemented. Recently an article in
National Geographic highlighted..........
