Foreword
Several million hectares of marginal agricultural land
remain unexploited in Europe, which may represent a waste of opportunities for
the cultivation of feedstock crops. In addition, making use of these spaces
would allow for the mass production of crops for bioenergy without jeopardising
food production and threatening conservation efforts. However, little remains
known about these marginal lands and their potential in terms of crop yields.
One recent study set out to review existing
literature to identify a set of herbaceous and wood crops which would be best
suited to be grown on European marginal lands, also attempting to gather
qualitative and quantitative data on the matter...
