Foreword

European Bioplastics advise that an actionable EU Bioeconomy Strategy should prioritise the development of a ‘Biopolymers Industrial Action Plan’. They suggest that this plan should focus on harmonising regulations, incentivising access to sustainable biomass, enhancing financial support for technological innovation, closing infrastructure gaps, incentivising access to food waste collection, and increasing market uptake for compostable plastics. Rob Beekers, chair of the Bio-Based Industries Consortium and Chair of board for the Circular Bio-Based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), especially emphasises the need for developing policies with clearer, stronger and harmonised frameworks.

Many current research projects are geared towards successfully incorporating the circularity aspect within the bioeconomy sector. Valencia-based Aimplas, the Spanish Plastics Technology Centre, is coordinating a project for the development of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA)-based packaging solutions derived from beer production waste. An ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development) team has patented an innovative process with low environmental impact to extract high quality oil from bakery waste to be used to obtain bio-lubricants and bio-based plastics. In the project ULTRADREAM, Netherlands-based Wageningen Food & Biobased Research aims to research the use of agricultural side streams and residues for developing novel bio-based polymers with higher rates of biodegradation upon UV-light exposure.

There is a continuous push in innovation and the release of new products promoting sustainability in the packaging sector. VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd runs INN-PRESSME Open Innovation Test Bed project which aims to develop novel, sustainable and recyclable solutions based on bio-based plastic or create fibre-based alternatives that can be recycled along with other fibre-based materials...
