Foreword

Many hygiene products, e.g. diapers, panty liners, wet wipes and sanitary products, contain plastic fibres alongside natural fibres such as cotton, as they aid in product performance. It is important for these products to be absorbent, sterile, soft, durable and lightweight. Unfortunately, despite the functionality of these products they contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and plastic fibres can pass into the environment. Wipes produced using plastic fibres are also responsible for a significant proportion of sewage systems blockages if flushed away. Due to these issues, a number of companies have begun replacing the fossil based polymers in their hygiene products with alternative fibres.
