Foreword

To scale up renewable energy from biomass plans across the UK, the Government has recently funded biomass projects that encompass planting, breeding, cultivating, and harvesting of biomass feedstocks, under the Biomass Feedstocks Innovation Programme. In Phase 1 of the Programme, funding was allocated to aid development of strong proposals and designs for these biomass productivity-boosting projects, whereas Phase 2 funding was for the subsequent demonstration stage – for these projects to feasibly deliver on a full commercial scale. Further, the Government has also recently funded numerous projects under the Hydrogen BECCS Innovation Programme, aimed at developmental projects in hydrogen from biomass that incorporate carbon capture and storage technology.

One such project to have received funding via the Biomass Feedstocks Innovation Programme, is headed by technology licensing company New Energy Farms. Their research project will attempt to evaluate over 40 promising energy grass varieties from existing breeding projects, to help multiply yields and introduce new varieties of these perennial grasses in the UK...
