Approaches to harnessing energy from sewage sludges and applying biosolids to land are well established and at the heart of the circular economy. Advanced anaerobic digestion and the valuable products of biogas and biomethane are key elements of net zero ambitions. Our understanding of process emissions in and around bioresources is growing, but the regulatory landscape and how the Industrial Emissions Directive will be implemented is unclear. Future outlets for biosolids are uncertain and we need to face up to the realities of emerging contaminants including PFAS and microplastics. Our industry is considering alternative processing options to recover nutrients and end routes including gasification and pyrolysis; but can these technologies deliver the reliability we require, at neutral cost and net zero?
This year’s European Biosolids & Bioresource Conference, as ever, focuses upon the pressing issues facing our industry and practical examples of how the industry is and can meet these challenges. The conference organisers are now inviting submissions on the themes above.
