Foreword
Sustainability development goals (SDGs) are guidelines
to improve the global socio-economic and environmental situation caused by
excessive fossil fuel use. These were implemented by the UN and should be met
by 2030 through national policies and commitments put in place in every single
UN member. Recent work identifies biorefineries
and biorefinery networks as likely to play a pivotal role in the establishment
of the bioeconomy and in the fulfilment of these SDGs. Through the processing
of biomass and its conversion into a range of valuable biobased goods (such as
biofuels, chemicals and power), biorefineries provide a solution to societies
dependence on fossil-resources.
The European Commission has
published a study providing an outlook on the future of integrated
biorefineries which produce chemicals and biobased products. The study
incorporates recommendations from representatives of economy, science, policy
and society at the regional, national and EU levels, along with their
commitments to driving the development of integrated biorefineries forward...
