Foreword
Lignocellulosic biomass
(LB) is occupying an ever-expanding place within the bioeconomy. More
specifically, the bioprocessing of lignocellulosic biomass to produce bio-based
products under a biorefinery setup is gaining global attention. Although this
shows much promise, the commercial viability of such industrial undertakings
remains uncertain. At the moment, this uncertainty is mainly due to the
unreliable nature of biomass supply chains and to volatile markets. In
addition, the industrial scale-up of these biorefinery processes remains a big
hurdle.
LB as long been recognised as a potential
feedstock for the production of second-generation biofuels. It provides an alternative
feedstock to food crops, which often pose an issue in the context of the “food
versus fuel” debate. As a result, research on the potential of LB within the
context of integrated biorefineries is on the rise. Thermochemical and
biochemical processes are assessed, and biorefining becomes increasingly
efficient and economically viable...
