Foreword
The Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB) has published its latest crop progress update. It reports varied crop progress in England, Scotland, and Wales due to weather and ground conditions. The east of England experienced favourable conditions, while the west of England experienced heavy rain and delayed drilling, i.e. a crop is planted later than usual, which means that harvesting season might experience pushbacks. Northern Ireland had a favourable autumn, but late-planted crops caused bottlenecks. Poor drilling conditions could lead to reduced yields and grain quality.
AHDB has also released an early UK balance sheet for wheat 2024/2025, showing a tighter supply-demand balance, where the supply is closely matched with its demand leading to a potential price fluctuations and market volatility. Total wheat availability is estimated at 16.638Mt, down 1.731Mt on the year, driven by a 21% decline in UK wheat production. Imports are forecast to be up 163Kt year on year, while opening stocks are at 2.987Mt. Total domestic consumption of wheat is estimated at 14.005Mt, down 934Kt on 2023/2024 levels. Human and industrial (H&I) wheat consumption is estimated to decline by 3% on the year to 7.248Mt. Bioethanol and energy usage is expected to decrease due to lower ethanol prices and a likely shift to increased maize usage. The proportion of imported wheat used this season is higher than last and is just slightly less than in 2020/2021. Wheat usage in animal feed is expected to fall by 668Kt to 6.463Mt. The overall wheat balance is estimated at 2.634Mt, down 797Kt from levels recorded last year.
A separate report from AHDB predicts a larger barley crop in the UK this season, with total availability at 8.497Mt...
