Foreword
The attention and importance of hemp as a feedstock has grown
significantly in recent years. Globally, in 2020, the industrial hemp market
size was around £3 billion, and is expected to hit £11 billion by 2026. This
high in fibre and low in active tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) class of Cannabis
sativa plant, has numerous applications – in the textile, paper, fabric, animal
care, food, and beverage industries. Further, hempseed oil has functional
properties like being able to provide a barrier for the skin, to prevent
entrance of pollutants. Thus, it can be utilised in beauty and personal care
products to reduce skin dryness or itchiness.
Industrial hemp crop
cultivation was legalised in 1993 in Britain, and federally legalised in 2018
in the US, but both under strict specifications. Should policies maintain such
strict regulations, the potential of hemp and its projected market will likely
not be attained...
