Foreword
An increasing use of food crops
to produce biofuel and industrial products has the potential to cause tension
in established markets. Indian reports stress that the escalating demand of
corn driven by ethanol production comes in direct competition with its poultry
feed market. Amid such concerns, the All India Poultry Breeder Association
(AIPBA) proceeds to urge the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry &
Dairying to reconsider the 50% import duty on corn.
Vegetable oils are also in high
demand. The USDA
anticipates that the levels of global production and processing of oilseeds in
the crop year 2023/24 are set to hit record highs. The increasing demand
is evidenced by the increased volumes destined for US-based renewable diesel
production.
Certain efforts have focused on
circumventing the ‘food vs. fuel’ debate by investigating feedstocks outside
the first-generation group. Tensei, leading feedstock technologists, have joined
forces with the iCAST consortium i.e., a partnership between British
universities, to investigate finding new value in waste coming from the paper
and fruit industries. At a commercial level, Dutch Paques Biomaterials and
Looop will work in partnership in producing PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoate) from agri-food
waste streams by means of synthetic biology...
