Foreword
One of the challenges of using bio-based feedstocks revolves around
finding the right supply of feedstock for each process. A range of factors can
have an impact on the usefulness of a particular feedstock e.g. location, cost,
quality, quantity and seasonal availability. Feedstocks may be suitable for a
number of processes and competition for a feedstock is often a key factor in
decision making. Whilst a lot of focus is given to competition to obtain
feedstocks and the effect this might have on shortages in supply or raised
costs, a surplus of alternative feedstocks can also have a detrimental effect
on availability of a feedstock. A glut in one feedstock can reduce the market
values, and reduce profitability, in competing feedstocks. This is a particular
concern in agriculture where planting decisions are often made well in advance
of sowing and where uncertainty can lead to a reduced supply of a particular crop.
