Foreword
Sustainable
Aviation Fuels (SAF) have the potential to contribute towards UK net zero
targets, with biofuels (from crops and waste), hydrogen, ammonia and synthetic
fuels (from captured carbon) amongst the contenders. The Royal Society
undertook a study to identify if the UK could produce enough of these biofuels
to replace all fossil derived aviation fuels in the UK. The study identified
that to replace UK aviation fuels with biofuels produced from energy crops
would require more than 50% of UK arable land which would be prohibitive. To
achieve the same through green hydrogen would require 2-3 times the 2020 UK
renewables generation through wind and solar energy. The study did not
thoroughly examine the role that waste and residue materials play in current
and future SAF production which is surprising considering the scale of continued
progress in this area.
