Foreword
Since the 1990s, the organics
processing sector has grown into an industry capable of using waste to produce
valuable products that have applications in a wide range of other sectors, such
as biofuels, fertiliser and even high value chemicals. The future of the sector
is bright and new opportunities are expected to arise under a new circular
economy model in which feedstock supply will undoubtedly increase
significantly. To promote this, and to restore trust in the waste processing
sector, the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has released a roadmap
for the organics sector, comprising clear objectives and actions for local
authorities, organic processors, policy makers and regulators to reduce
contamination of feedstocks for organic processors, increase recycling rates,
increase feedstock supply and protect the environment.
In the meantime, research is moving forward and
finding new ways of valorising waste across a range of streams. Apple pomace is
waste that remains following apple juice extraction. It is often discarded in
landfills and may cause environmental issues. However, more recently, apple
pomace has become a potential high-value feedstock...
