Biomass pellets
are increasingly being utilised to decarbonise energy systems through
replacement of fossil fuels in electricity generation and heating systems. The
use of biomass in this way is identified by the IPCC as a critical measure in
meeting global climate targets, however many high profile proponents of
environmental principles criticise this approach, and many view burning of
biomass to be damaging in all cases.
A group of scientists has written to the
European Commission to encourage improved management of Europe’s forests. There
is heightened concern that European forests are vulnerable to wildfires, pests
and diseases with fears that global temperature increases could cause severe
