Food waste is a pressing global issue, with over a third of food produced globally wasted each year. Most of this waste finds its way to overcrowded landfills, where the decomposition of food releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. However, when harnessed effectively, food waste becomes a valuable resource, contributing for example to the production of bioenergy and various biobased products using a biorefinery approach.
