Foreword
International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) has recently published a guidance document that focuses on the supply chain of waste and residues feedstocks. This document, produced by a multi-stakeholder ISCC working group on wastes and residues, provides clarity and offers definitions and properties of waste feedstocks. It specifically defines Used Cooking Oils (UCOs) as: ‘oils and fats of vegetable or animal origin that have been used in the cooking, frying, preparation, or preservation of food for human consumption. Food preparation includes marinating, whereas preservation involves methods like pickling and canning foods in fats or oils.’
In the USA, producers using UCO can benefit from the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) programs by receiving Renewable Identification Numbers (RINS) and LCFS credits. When renewable fuel is produced, RINS are generated. Each gallon (i.e., ~ 8.34 pints) of renewable diesel, ethanol, or biodiesel is assigned a unique RINS number which can then be traded independently on the RIN market. In the state of California, fuel manufacturers who produce and sell fuels with a carbon intensity below the state baseline are eligible to receive credits under the LCFS. One metric tonne of CO2 equivalent reduction is represented by each credit; similarly to RINS, LCFS can be traded in the open market.
Current demand for UCO in the USA is at an all-time high, as 1.6 billion litres of UCO were imported within the first 8 months of 2024 which is three times higher than the respective period in 2023. According to CoBank USA, UCO and tallow imports now account for an estimated of 1 out of 6 gallons of domestically produced biodiesel and renewable diesel...
