Foreword
In light of changes
to the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), complexities and
inconsistencies of measuring the environmental impact of forestry has caused
serious disagreements regarding the decarbonisation of the UK and Europe.
Whilst most parties agree to common principles towards decarbonisation,
transition to sustainable practice and increased biodiversity, the timescale
and the appropriate pathways to achieve this often divide opinion. Lack of consensus
about how to evaluate the impact of mitigation measures has led to increased
polarisation, and distrust of stakeholders, despite attempts at scientific
engagement.
