Foreword
While sustainability lies at
the heart of the bioeconomy it is regularly questioned. According to EIT Food, a
European Knowledge and Innovation Community, the increase in demand for biofuels
crops has extended farming onto marginal lands, contributing to biodiversity
loss and water contamination. They also argue it has inflated agricultural
commodity prices and thereby aggravated food insecurity. Moreover, farming
currently accounts for approximately a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions
and erodes 24 billion of topsoil annually.
To address these challenges, a
growing number of farmers, industries and policymakers are turning to
regenerative agriculture. Regenerative agriculture seeks to restore and enhance
the health of our ecosystems, soil, and crops. It supports practices such as
cover cropping, reduced tillage, and diverse crop rotations, all of which help
sequester carbon, enhance soil fertility, and reduce the need for chemical
inputs.
Promising prospects for
sustainability lie within emerging cover crops, which offer a compelling
response to concerns about allocating land to biofuels...
