Each month we review the latest news and select key announcements and commentary from across the biofuels sector.

Foreword

In the bioeconomy, the circular economy ethos is key: products at end-of-life are re-utilised and fed back into the system. With biofuels, this is somewhat difficult, as their entire purpose is to be burned to power vehicles. However, this month we have a story that demonstrates how circular economy can still be incorporated into the biofuels sector. Sometimes, biobased alcohols are produced as wastes or by-products from biobased industrial processes, but biofuels manufacturer Gevo has developed a process by which these alcohols, can be turned into biobased isoprene. Isoprene is one of the major polymers used in the manufacture of synthetic rubber, meaning that the by-product bioethanol could be utilised for the production of vehicle tyres, creating a curious instance of circular bioeconomy, with the potential for vehicles to be both powered and shod with bioethanol. While in reality the end-use of this biobased isoprene.........
