First-generation biofuels are being phased out by RED II, from a 7% cap on the share of first-generation biofuels in road and rail transport in 2020, to 3.8% in 2030. The reduction is driven by concerns surrounding deforestation, possible impacts on food prices and the potential for indirect land use change to reduce their effectiveness in addressing climate change. Thus, space efficient cultivation of oilseed crops for biofuels, and partnerships which allow the most effective cultivation and subsequent processing of relevant feedstocks, are pivotal.

Bunge, the world’s largest oilseed processor, has recently formed a 50/50 venture with Chevron, to help develop low carbon feedstocks for renewable fuels. With Chevron’s funding and Bunge’s expertise in oilseed processing, particularly soybean facilities, Chevron will be able to utilise the resulting oil as feedstock for biodiesel and jet fuel manufacture.
