According to both Statista and Forbes, today’s global cosmetic
industry is valued at over half a trillion US dollars and is expected to reach
$700-800 billion by 2025. A major trend identified by Forbes that they expect
will shape the future of the beauty business, is a switch to natural,
sustainable, and clean beauty products. Two-thirds of people they surveyed said
they would ‘try new products from other brands if they are natural’ – natural
meaning products from 100% naturally-occurring ingredients, without any
artificial components.
A recent
collaboration between Ginkgo Bioworks and Sumitomo Chemical looks to act upon
this very insight. The launch of their new cell programming project targets the
development of new fermentation strains, utilising Ginkgo’s organism
engineering expertise, to be eventually deployed in personal care and cosmetic
