Foreword
The generation of almost 190kg a
year of packaging waste per European has prompted efforts to address the
environmental impact of packaging materials. In November, the European
Parliament took a significant step
by adopting new rules to reduce, reuse and recycle packaging. Whilst setting overall packaging reduction
targets and voting for measures such as restricting plastic packaging and
banning the use of ‘forever chemicals’ in cosmetics and personal care
packaging, the Parliament's decision left some stakeholders, namely European
Bioplastics (EUBP), disappointed as “the role of biobased plastics in achieving
the targets of recycled content was not supported”. Yet, EUBP commended the
European Parliament for recognising the role of compostable plastics in
achieving packaging waste prevention and reaching recycling targets.
Compostable packaging
(certified according to the European standard EN 13432 or similar international
standard), when handled properly, is one approach to enable the clean return of
biogenic resources back to the earth and address some of the soil contamination
challenges posed by durable packaging...
