Foreword
Bio-based plastics are plastics wholly or partly derived from
materials of biological
origin, typical feedstock includes starch, cellulose, oils (e.g., rapeseed
oil), lignin (wood), proteins (e.g., maize zein) and polysaccharides (e.g.,
xylans).
Even with the failure of the EU Environment Council to fully recognise the value of
compostable bio-based plastics in their latest meeting, the global post-pandemic
levels of their production are ever-increasing. The predominant market segment
is packaging, including both flexible and rigid, followed by fibres. The
positive trend in production is exemplified by partnerships, joint ventures and
the success of bio-based plastic companies in acquiring further funding for
their manufacturing operations.
UBQ Materials, developer of advanced materials made from waste, has
collaborated with Keter, the world's largest resin-based consumer goods
company, to incorporate bio-based
plastic substitute UBQ™ across multiple new product lines. The expansion is thought
to be strategic so that it enables Keter to include Scope 3 emission reduction in
its sustainability pipeline. Another notable collaboration is the one between
the Japanese Toray industries and Yoshida
Co. They recently have announced their agreement to jointly create materials
for Yoshida’s Tanker bags (i.e., PorterTM) employing Toray’s Ecodear
N510, a 100% plant-based nylon fibre.
