Foreword
Fibre production has doubled in the past 20 years, with around 111
million tonnes of fibre having been produced in 2019. In 2018, the global fibre
market was estimated at $37.24 billion, with an expected 9% increase for the
following year. The market for fibre spans a wide array of industries,
including woven and non-woven goods, and with the increasing demand for natural
and biobased products, the sustainable fibre market is on the rise.
The appeal for novel biobased fibres has led
Novo Holdings to invest several millions in AMSilk, the world’s first
industrial supplier of synthetic silk biopolymers. AMSilk’s products are
synthesised from plant-based materials through bacterial fermentation, and are
100% recyclable and 100% biodegradable. The investment also includes several
industry leaders spanning a range of sectors in which AMSilk’s technology has
applications (i.e. textile, healthcare, consumer products). More, Stora Enso
and Pulpex have agreed to collaborate on a project aiming to industrialise the
production of wood fibre pulp-derived paper bottles...
