Foreword

When biobased and chemically recycled feedstocks are added to a chemical manufacturing process alongside fossil-based feedstocks, physical segregation of recycled content is often technically and financially unviable. The mass balance approach traces the amounts of these renewable feedstocks through a complex value chain, allowing biobased content to be attributed, mathematically, to one, or numerous outputs, regardless of whether the physical product a consumer uses, has recycled or renewable content in it. This reduces the need to adapt formulations and processes to cater for biobased feedstocks, whilst not only reducing fossil inputs, but also providing the same product standard as traditional feedstocks would. This set of rules can be applied to biobased plastics and is often audited by third party schemes like the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC), or Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB).

Borealis, leaders in circular polyolefins, has recently developed PEX Pipe Blue – a portfolio of cross-linked polyethylene pipes, alongside UK plumbing system specialists, Uponor. The pipes are derived from pulp production waste or food processing oil residues, for use in the construction industry. Similarly, Italian pipes and fittings company, NUPI, has chosen Borealis’s Bornewables™ polypropylene...
