Foreword
Generic commodity plastic materials are
produced from fossil resources on a vast scale and at relatively low cost.
Fossil resources are also used to produce specific engineered plastics for a
wide range of uses, e.g. coatings on packaging, building materials, textiles. Although
development and discussion often focusses on the production of drop-in
commodity biobased plastics there is also considerable efforts to develop
higher value engineered biobased plastic. In order to replace these specialised
plastics the bio-derived plastics need to be designed and produced which
exhibit the necessary properties and can be reliably formulated and
manufactured to be used for the required purpose.
